CEO Launches Betting Pool on His Own Baby’s Due Date
This is not a scam warning. It appears to be legit with proceeds going to the National MS Society. Scott Hardy, CEO of Top Class Actions LLC, announced this week, the beginning of a “baby pool” allowing visitors to his company’s website to log a guess as to when his baby will be born. The person with the closest guess will win and a portion of the proceeds (51%) will go to the National MS Society. The remaining 49% goes to the winner. Mr. Hardy keeps nothing.
The site gave no serious explanation for contest, so, figuring that it was either a publicity stunt (which I figured was the case given that this was a legal action company) or a scam (I thought this highly unlikely), I contacted the CEO for some background.
He was very forthcoming, particularly about his passion for the National MS Society.
Mr. Hardy said,
One item I haven’t shared on the Blog or in the Baby-Pool section is why I chose the National MS Society as the charity. I chose it because my brother in law has relapsing/remitting MS. He’s had bad relapses where he’s had to go to crutches or can’t walk more then a few hundred feet without resting his legs. As a personal trainer this was especially hard on him mentally. For someone so fit to lose much of their freedom to run, lift weights and stay healthy, you can probably imagine the impact. I’ve seen the effects of Multiple Sclerosis personally, and I want to do everything I can to help create more treatments for this debilitating disease.
Thankfully, my brother in law is now taking Tysabri infusions once a month, and that’s made a tremendous positive impact on his way of life. He’s not back 100% yet, but he is back on the exercise bike and starting his last year of Pharmacist school at the University of Arizona. He’s even getting married at the end of September, so life’s definitely ticked in a positive direction for him.
The TopClassActions.com CEO officially launched the beginning of the “baby pool” on Monday, July 28, 2008 allowing visitors to the site to log a guess as to when his baby will be born. The person with the closest guess will win and a portion of the proceeds will go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Visitors are able to log a guess and view open time slots at http://www.topclassactions.com/baby-pool.
When I asked him what sort of reaction he has had thus far, Mr. Hardy said,
When I speak with people about the baby pool, their first reaction typically is a look of confusion, then bemusement.
